A city once home to Mozart, Mahler, Klimt and Schiele, Austria’s capital is embedded with culture. Even the act of drinking coffee and eating cake is a special ritual with its own set of traditions, which we happily respected during our stay. While there’s no shortage of classical music and museums, the city’s new wave of lively galleries and concept stores give travellers reason to explore beyond the historical first district.
With a rich past and an equally exciting future, we often found ourselves traversing Vienna’s classical and modern worlds. As you flip through this issue, you’ll notice that many of our featured artists and designers do the same. From the Austrian fabrics used in Benjamin Eichhorn’s conceptual works and Andreas Eberharter’s striking masks to Lilya Corneli’s To be a Muse project, heritage flows through Vienna’s contemporary art scene. Meanwhile, designers like Rainer Mutsch and Romana Zöchling are pushing the city into an innovative realm, challenging residents to embrace new forms of fashion and mobility.
